To ensure safety during knuckle boom hire, always: Conduct a pre-use inspection
If you’re unsure on any of the above, always refer to the manufacturer’s specifications and operating manual before starting work
A knuckle boom lift can be used both indoors and outdoors. For indoor use, choose electric models with non-marking tyres to prevent emissions and floor damage. For outdoor use, diesel or hybrid boom lift models are ideal, as they offer greater power and adaptability to uneven or rough terrain.
You need a High-Risk Work Licence (WP class) to operate a knuckle boom lift with a boom length of 11 metres or more. For smaller lifts, while a licence isn't required for boom lift hire, proper training and competency in safe operation are mandatory under workplace safety regulations.
A knuckle boom is used when access is not directly vertical or linear. Its articulated sections allow the platform to reach up, over and around obstacles, which is not possible with a scissor lift or straight boom. It is suited to sites where structures, barriers or restricted positioning limit direct access.
The reach should be based on both the working height and the horizontal distance needed to access the task. It is important to consider obstacles between the machine and the work area, as these affect positioning.
Knuckle booms are suited to sites with obstacles, restricted positioning or limited ground access near the work area. Their articulated design allows access in areas where equipment cannot be placed directly below the task, such as built-up environments, around structures or within confined work zones.
